Description
Beyond the institution: queer and trans* deviant practices as pedagogies of careMilo van der Maaden and Fabiola Camuti
Today’s higher arts education demands that students engage with complex societal contexts – navigating difference, negotiating conflict, and imagining alternative futures. Central to this is the ability to build meaningful, ethical relationships. In this extended workshop, we explored how care can function not only as an educational value, but as a relational and systemic principle that reshapes pedagogies, practices, and institutional cultures.
Participants collaboratively analysed real educational conflicts, addressing these cases through tools like care mapping and zine-making. We asked: Who is cared for in our institutions? Who decides what care looks like? What do feminist, queer and trans* practices of care teach us about educational responsibility, visibility, and risk?
By the end of the session, participants collectively imagined new ways of caring – ones that resist assimilation, embrace relational complexity, and center the needs of those most often pushed to the margins. This is care not as compliance, but as critical practice.
