Abstract

This site-specific interspecies performance, created on May 11, 2024, staged an encounter between Soya the Cow - the drag alter ego of Swiss artist Daniel Hellmann - and Piet, an intersex bovine living with their herd in a meadow in Weert (NL). The performance was documented in photography and film and later adapted into a short film of the same title by De Transketeers, an Utrecht-based transgender advocacy and film collective. Both the live work and the film form part of an artistic research project by Louis van den Hengel, which brings performance art, care theory, and queer and trans ecology into dialogue to develop a trans*species care ethics.
