Abstract

In the Netherlands, there has been considerable debate about the desirability and necessity of professional guidelines for social work. Guidelines can support social workers in making practical decisions by bringing together scientific knowledge, best practices, and ethical standards. At the same time, there is hesitation because guidelines are also associated with control and standardization, which can conflict with the emphasis on customization and context-sensitiveness that characterizes social work.
