The paper outlines a key idea of environmental ethics: intrinsic values of nature, and defends it against two current alternatives: instrumental values (spelled out economically, such as ecosystem services and offsetting), or relation values (e.g. in posthuman and new materialist approaches). It argues that humanism has strong motives to opt for instrumental values, because only this approach allows for a mutual flourishing of both nature and humankind.
