My paper makes sense of Marx's intellectual development by locating him within the larger streaming of European radical enlightenment. His earliest approach aimed to understand with enlightenment critical thinking did not have the desired effects, and only at a later stage he discovered how deeply material factors influence our way thinking and feeling. This way, material ideologies can immunize irrational practices against critique - they are so deeply embodied that consciousness can hardly reach down to them.
