Doret de Ruyter is hoogleraar (filosofie van) Educatie aan de UvH sinds 1 juni 2018. Daarvoor was zij 15 jaar hoogleraar Theoretische Pedagogiek aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
In 1993 promoveerde zij aan de VU op een dissertatie over overheidsinterventie in gezinnen en bleef aan de VU werken als postdoc onderzoeker en later als UD bij de Hendrik Piersonleerstoel voor Christelijk Onderwijs. Daarnaast werkte zij als senioronderzoeker bij het NIZW (nu NJI).
In 2000 verhuisde zij naar Glasgow waar ze bijna vier jaar werkte als (senior) lecturer in de afdeling Religious Education van de Faculty of Education van de University of Glasgow.
